Jerry
Jerry and me17-year old man from the neighboring Kaffe tribe. He visited me regularly and helped me learn Pidgin. He wanted to trade his "bilum" hat for my basketball shoes.

Kopsi
Kopsi and meThis photo is taken inside the house he built himself. He grows coffee, which is quite a lucrative business.

Jehu
Jehu and BibleAn elder in the church of Lufah in the Yagaria tribe. Lufah is the New Tribes Mission's only "completed" work - begun in the early 1960's and completed in the late 1980's. Jehu is reading a Pidgin bible. I spent a night in his house together with his family and two small piglets. Since it was cold, they kept a fire burning all night, which made the house very smoky. He gave me a big "kina" shell as a souvenir. The shell can be used as part of the "bride price".

Iwam Church, by the May River
Iwam ChurchThe congregation actually asks questions during the sermon. Someone asked if the rumors he heard about dark-skinned and fair-skinned people coming from different ancestors (not the same Adam) were true. The preacher answered that that's the reason God gave His Word -- to tell what is true. I got a chance to play "Amazing Grace" on the fishing-line strung guitar.
