Using Windows file/print services via \\gloworm.stanford.edu

The Unix cluster server, gloworm, can also share the files in your home directory to a Windows 95/98/NT/2000/XP machine as well as serving as a network print server. In order to access these services,

Using file shares from gloworm

Browsing probably won't work unless you are on the same subnet as gloworm. Either Note that the file and directory creation masks allow the world (well, any user on the system) to read your files. If you need a more protected tree, put them under a restricted directory.

Printing via gloworm

Windows XP does not seem to be able to print via \\gloworm.stanford.edu\<printer_name>. Create a lpr port for the printer.
  1. Open the Printers control panel
  2. Add Printer
  3. Local Printer + Create a new port (LPR Port)
  4. Use "gloworm.stanford.edu" as the name of the server providing lpd
  5. The printer name is the name of the printer queue on gloworm

SMB? samba? What's that?

SMB -- Server Message Block
This is a network message protocol (favored by Microsoft) for file and print sharing. It has recently been rebranded as CIFS (common internet filesystem), but anyone familiar with Microsoft knows exactly what Microsoft means (i.e. "common", if you use Windoze).
SAMBA -- a Unix-based SMB server
See http://us1.samba.org/samba/samba.html for the complete details.
